Historical Note

The Sun Oil Trust was formed on December 31, 1919, in Butte, Montana, with J. P. Hanson, T. H. Wilson, Leo C. Scrogin, J. F. Emigh, and Ralph W. Rich as trustees. The trust acquired oil properties in the oil fields near Moorcroft, Wyoming and began drilling and production in 1920.

Content Description

The collection contains incorporation papers, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and other materials from the early years of the company. The vast majority of the collection is the correspondence, which includes substantial exchanges with the board of trustees and attorneys working for the Sun Oil Trust. There are also materials from the county in which the company drilled, the state of Wyoming, and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The materials are arranged in seven series.

Originals located in the Butte-Silver Bow Archives, where they were transferred from the World Museum of Mining.

Acquisition Information

Loaned for microfilming by the World Museum of Mining in Butte, 1969.

Processing Note

The original processor arranged the materials, microfilmed them, and wrote the finding aid. In 2004, the finding aid was encoded with minimal revisions.
