Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles Jay Gould, Jr., was born on February 28, 1912 in Eaton, Ohio and raised in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended high school and college in West Virginia graduating cum laude from Marshall College (now Marshall University) in 1934. He received an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Iowa State College in 1937 where he taught botany until 1941. In 1941 he joined the staff of the Western Washington Experimental Station in Puyallup, now the Western Washington Research and Extension Center (WWREC), as an assistant plant pathologist specializing in the control of Northwest turf and bulb disease. In 1942, he received his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Iowa State College.

His significant accomplishments include organizing the first bulb growers short course in 1948, studying bulb diseases in the Netherlands as a Fulbright scholar in 1951, and organizing the first conference of turfgrass pathologists,as well as publishing nearly 350 articles dealing with various plant diseases. Dr. Gould retired from the WWREC in 1977. The following year Dr. Gould was named a Fellow in the American Phytopathological Society.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged in three series: Correspondence, Budget. and Experiments and Related Data. Correspondence, 1947-1977, includes General Correspondence from 1947 through 1977 restructured chronologically by year, and Other Correspondence from 1948 through 1977 arranged alphabetically by subject and/or correspondent.

Budget Data from 1935 through 1976 includes budget and funding information of the Western Washington Research and Extension Center from 1935 through 1976 arranged chronologically by year, as well as data relating to the WWREC relationship with the United States Department of Agriculture from 1954 through 1976. This material consists of budget information, correspondence, memoranda, automobile reports, greenhouse data, and time and attendance reports arranged alphabetically by subject.

Experiments and Related Data from 1933 through 1977 are divided into three sections: Turf, 1949-1977, ornamentals, 1938-1974, and Other Research and Projects, 1933-1975. Turf data is arranged by experimental species and includes Snowmold, Fusarium and Typhula (two fungi that cause snowmold in eastern Washington), Corticum, Ophiobolus, and Fairy Ring research as well as correspondence, memoranda, and reports relating to turf and turfgrass pathology arranged alphabetically. Ornamental data from 1938 through 1974 is arranged alphabetically and includes experimental research on basal rot, crown rot, and other ornamental diseases. Other Research and Projects from 1933 through 1975 includes experimental data, research, and reports arranged alphabetically by subject.

Acquisition Information

The papers of Dr. Charles J. Gould were donated to the Washington State University Library in November 1977 by Dr. Gould upon his retirement from the Western Washington Research and Extension Center (WWREC) in Puyallup, WA, (UA 77-33).
