Biographical NoteReturn to Top

R. James Oppedahl was born in 1946. He received an M.A. in history from the University of Montana in 1976; his thesis was on Glacier National Park. That same year, on the recommendation of University of Montana Archivist Dale Johnson, and in conjunction with the Judicial Conference of the United States' Bicentennial Committee, the office of United States District Court Judge Russell Smith hired him to do research on deceased federal judges from Montana.

The collection contains Oppedahl's research materials on federal judges from Montana: James Harris Baldwin (1876-1944), William H. Hunt , Carl L. Rasch (1866-1961), George M. Bourquin (1863-1958), Hiram Knowles (1834-1911), Charles Nelson Pray (1868-1963), and Walter Lyndon Pope (1889-1969). Materials include handwritten notes, copies of biographical dictionaries, copies of newspaper obituaries, and completed Bicentennial Committee questionnaires.

The original processers created seven different collections: SC 210, SC 211, SC 212, SC 213, SC 214, SC 215, and SC 216. In 2004, the collections were combined into a new collection, Mss 141, and re-described.
