In 1851 Samuel A. Snowden was living in London. His son, Samuel D., was in Oregon on a land claim near Champoeg, and engaged in survey work. In 1853 the elder Snowden, along with his daughter, Mary Ann, came to Oregon. He lived with friends in Forest Grove.

From 1851 to 1853 Snowden's letters paint a picture of Oregon politics, government, and social life, as seen through his son's letters and Oregon newspapers. The letters of 1853-1854, written from Forest Grove and French Prairie, are from Samuel A. Snowden to his son Samuel D. Snowden.
