Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Bernard Alfred Etcheverry was born in San Diego, California on June 30, 1881. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1902 with a degree in civil engineering. He was an instructor of civil engineering at the University of California from 1902 to 1903 before becoming a professor of civil engineering and irrigation engineering at the University of Nevada in Reno from 1903 until 1917. In 1917 he returned to Berkeley where he worked until his retirement. Etcheverry was, as well, a consultant for various water projects in the West and British Columbia. From 1915 to 1917 he published a three volume book, Irrigation Practice and Engineering which was to become a standard textbook in the field.

On August 6, 1903 Etcheverry married Helen Hanson. They had two sons, Bernard Earle and Alfred Starr. On October 26, 1954 Etcheverry passed away in New Haven, Connecticut.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The B.A. Etcheverry Water Reclamation Collection consists of 795 images that document the building of numerous dams and irrigation works (such as the Arkansas Valley Sugar Beet and Irrigation Land Company, the Bear River Canal Company, Elephant Butte Dam, Modesto-Turlock Project, Twin lakes Irrigation Company, Umatilla Project, Truckee-Carson Project, and the Riverside-Corina-Corona Project) in the western half of the United States from 1900 to 1917. Images from both private irrigation companies and the United States Reclamation Service (later renamed the Bureau of Reclamation) are included.

These images are mounted onto acid-free boards. In many cases Etcheverry wrote out information about the image on the verso side. These handwritten notes were photocopied and are located next to the corresponding photographs.

Around this outlet a secondary dike is constructed as a loop and at its crown a second outlet provision is installed. This plan allows a duplicate set of gates for outlets placed and operated independent of each other. Another feature is that the outlet channel which is generally a deeply cut channel, is located some distance from the main dam."
