Andrew Love Neff was born at Crescent, Salt Lake County, Utah, on 17 February 1878. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in 1902 and received his Ph.D. from the University of California in 1918. Between degrees, he married Lauretta Snow in 1906. He served as principal of three high schools, then from 1919-1936 he was a member of the faculty at the University of Utah. In 1935, he was appointed head of the Department of History and Political Science. Andrew Love Neff died in 1936. His wife had his book published in 1940.

The Andrew Love Neff papers (1851-1940) consist mainly of Neff's research materials for his book History of Utah. He had originally intended to write three volumes, but his death in 1936 cut short his project. Only the first volume was published. The collection starts out with Neff's personal materials and correspondence, located in box 1. Boxes 2-4 contain the rough draft for his book, with the final typescript located in boxes 5-6. Boxes 7-10 contain research materials used in writing the book. They are divided into names and subjects. Boxes 11-12 contain materials about Utah and World War I.
