This collection documents the Calbreath and Smith families, both pioneer families in Oregon. The collection contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, diaries, account books, day books, and manuscripts of poetry and prose by Irene Smith Calbreath.

John Calbreath, born in West Virginia, came to Oregon with his family in 1865. He attended Toland Medical College in San Francisco and practiced medicine in Lafayette and McMinnville, Oregon. From 1899 to 1908 he was superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum. He married Irene Smith, daughter of Sidney Smith, an Oregon pioneer.
The papers consist mainly of letters from members of the Smith and Calbreath families. They are arranged in series: Series I: Sidney Smith, 19 letters sent, 1863-1967; 30 letters received, including letters from Gustavus Hines, Lucious J. Smith, and James Smith; Series II: Mianda Smith (Mrs. Sidney Smith), 30 letters sent, 1865-1907; Series III: Almira Smith, daughter of Sidney Smith, 15 letters sent, 1865-1907, most from St. Mary's Academy, Portland, Oregon; Series IV: John U. Smith, son of Sidney Smith, 58 letters sent, 1885 - 1906; Series V: Mianda Smith, daughter of Sidney Smith, 15 letters sent, 1867-1868, most from St. Mary's Academy, Portland, Oregon; Series VI: Irene Smith Calbreath (Mrs. John Calbreath), 42 letters sent 1864-1888; 48 letters received, 1862-1906, including letters from Annie Brady, Helen Cummins, A.M. Griffith, and Addie Lewelling; Series VII: John Calbreath, 59 letters sent, 1874-1904; 44 letters received, 1881-1901, including letters from William J. Calbreath, Reuben Lambert, and George W. McBride; Series VIII: Evelene Calbreath, daughter of John Calbreath, 317 letters sent, 1897-1928; 80 letters received, 1897-1930, including letters from William S. Brady, W.C. Brown, Kathryn Meisle Franklin, and Rubin Goldmark; Series IX: Helen Calbreath, daughter of John Calbreath, 218 letters sent, 1897-1928, including letters from Roy Thomas Bishop, and Marion Lou West; Series XI: Helen and Evelene Calbreath, 368 letters from Europe, 1907-1909. These letters were written to Dr. and Mrs. John Calbreath while their daughters were in Europe studying music. They were in Berlin most of the time, staying at a pension, where they met Edith Sitwell.
Series XII: Miscellaneous documents, including Sidney Smith account books, 1840-1845, a daybook, 1864-1865, diaries of Irene Smith Calbreath, 1870, and Evelene Calbreath, 1898, and manuscripts of prose and poetry by Irene Smith Calbreath.
Series XIII: Photographs consists of 66 images, primarily 19th c. vintage portraits of friends and family by Oregon and San Francisco photographers.
