Biographical NoteReturn to Top

May Oviatt graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1908 with a BS degree in Household Science and taught public school in Benton County after her graduation. The 1917 and 1922 Oregon State alumni directories indicate that she was living in Los Angeles. According to the 1925 alumni directory, she was married to J. Cairns and living in Fulford Harbor, British Columbia.

Oviatt -- from Buell, Oregon (in Polk County) -- attended public schools in Polk County. She enrolled at Oregon Agricultural College in September 1904.

The May Oviatt Collection consists of certificates and contracts documenting Oviatt's employment as a public school teacher after she graduated from Oregon Agricultural College. The collection includes contracts with the Benton County schools; teaching certificates for the State of Oregon; and the results of Department of Public Instruction examinations. The collection also includes Oviatt's high school diploma from the Polk County Public Schools received in 1903.

The materials were donated to the Special Collections & Archives Research Center in 2012 by Oviatt's grandson, Lorne Duncan.
