Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William G. Walter was born November 1, 1914 in Lake Placid, New York. Walter received his B.S. and M.S. in bacteriology from Cornell University in 1938 and 1941. In 1952, he received his Ph.D. in bacteriology and public health from Michigan State College. In 1942, Walter joined the faculty at Montana State College (Montana State University) as assistant Professor of Microbiology and retired in 1980 from the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs. In the course of his tenure at Montana State University, Walter also served as Associate Professor, Professor, and Department Head of Microbiology.

During the course of his career, Walter utilized closed circuit television as a teaching tool. He conducted studies that ranged from microbiological sampling of hospital carpets to spore contamination from stainless steel surfaces, as well as how to measure contamination and learning how to lower contamination levels of contamination for ships sent into outer space. Walter co-authored or edited seven texts on Microbiology, as well as more than 80 articles for scientific publications. His intellectual and educational efforts earned many honors; some examples include the Mangold Award, the Walter F. Snyder Award, and MSU Blue and Gold Award. Walter died January 13, 2000 in Bozeman, Montana.

Many of the materials gathered by Walter were intended for the purpose of writing a comprehensive history of the Montana State University biology department. Series four contains oversized materials that have been separated from the series, the separation is denoted by an asterisk(*) next to the folder from which the materials were removed. Correspondence in this series consists of William G. Walter's day-to-day transactions and research within the Microbiology department. Topics include closed-circuit television, Board of Education and Training (BET), public service, adult education, Washington Alaska Montana Idaho Program (WAMI), supplies, American Society for Microbiology (ASM), committees, panel discussions, departmental issues, Sigma Xi, Montana Academy of Sciences, American Public Health Association (APHA), students, and courses. Also discussed are Rocky Mountain Laboratory, publications, experiments, Montana Public Health Association (MPHA), awards, Phi Kappa Phi, environmental health, scholarships, donations, Montana Environmental Health Association (MEHA), former students, and departmental history.
