Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Robert Nelson Stanfield (1832-1896) was a native of Sangamon County, Illinois, and came to Umatilla County, Oregon, in 1860 from California. He moved to Pendleton, Oregon, in 1883 and ran a warehouse and transport business. Later he bought a farm on Butter Creek. His first wife was Phoebe Atwood Stanfield, and his second wife was Hattie Townsend Stanfield. His son, also named Robert Nelson Stanfield (1877-1945), served as U.S. Senator from Oregon. The town of Stanfield, Oregon, is named for the family.

Papers of Robert Nelson Stanfield (1832-1896), long-time resident and pioneer in Umatilla County, Oregon, and of his second wife, Hattie Townsend Stanfield. The collection includes legal and business records and a small number of personal papers. Included are documents detailing supplies and services provided by Stanfield to the 1st Regiment, 3rd Brigade of the Oregon State Militia during the Indian war of 1878, and lists of claims, with names of soldiers. Additional materials include: a letter of condolence addressed to Hattie Stanfield of Echo, Oregon, upon the death of her husband, R.N. Stanfield, 1896, in original envelope; two business letters from R. N. Stanfield of Pendleton, Oregon, 1883, one in original envelope; one shopping list for R.N. Stanfield from Hattie Stanfield, circa 1880s; and a packet of genealogical research on Temperance Dean Stanfield's descendants, completed 2003. Oversize materials include four certificates of appointment as a notary public; a land deed signed by President U.S. Grant; and poster for the Republican ticket, 1920.
