Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Daniel Sylvester Tuttle (1837-1923) was born on January 26, 1837 in Windham, New York. In 1857, he graduated from Columbia and later graduated in 1862 from the General Theological Seminary. In 1866, Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle was elected by the House of Bishops to be the Missionary Bishop of Montana. In 1880, Tuttle served as the Missionary Bishop for the House of Bishops formed a new Missionary District in Utah and Idaho. Six years later, Bishop Tuttle was elected to be the Bishop of Missouri; he served in this position until his death. Tuttle was also acting Bishop of the Missionary District of Salt Lake from 1903-1904. He passed away on April 17,1923 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The letter to G.H. Deshon 1871, is the original letter written by Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle to a Reverend G.H. Deshon. In the letter Daniel Tuttle talks about the religious acts he performed, as well as a Native American attack that happened in the area he was residing. A typescript transcription of the letter is also included.

Acquisition Information

Original Letter and typescript transcription addressed to Reverend G.H. Deshon from Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle, were donated to the Museum of the Rockies by Mrs. R. R. Renne. The letter was originally a part of the papers of Reverend Frank B. Lewis. The Museum of the Rockies then gave Montana State University the letter on March 13, 1985.
