Historical NoteReturn to Top

The United States Congress established Yellowstone National Park in 1872, and in 1886, the Secretary of the Interior requested federal troops be stationed in the park. The troops served in the park until the passage of the National Park Act in 1916. The Yellowstone National Park Library started sometime between 1897 and 1903 following the donation of two large personal collections from Hiram Chittenden and George Anderson. Park records date back to 1882, but it was not until the passage of the National Archives Act in 1934 that Yellowstone began a more systematic approach to the documentation of its institutional history. The 1934 bill required federal agencies maintained their own records (U.S. Geologic Survey, Fish and Wildlife, BLM, etc.), although there was no uniform system for gathering data. The National Park Service had no all-encompassing program until 1971 at which time it established a formal archival plan. In addition to the National Park Service's documentation of agency records, Yellowstone archivists also maintained newspaper clippings files related to park activities, which were collected from regional and national periodicals.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Clippings in this collection were originally maintained by the archives at Yellowstone National Park and were filed in two collections. The first consisted of 22 boxes with dates between 1977-1989 and were arranged by year with individual publications separated by title. Larger papers like the Billings Gazette were also divided by the month. All the clippings were in reverse chronological order, and the folders were not alphabetized. Also, a number of boxes had individual subject files, mostly photocopies. The second collection consisted of four boxes dated from the 1950s-1990. These clippings were filed by year rather than by newspaper title, and subject files included original clippings from various newspapers. The original filing system lent itself to dividing the collection into two series. In Series 1 clippings from individual newspapers have been arranged in alphabetical order by the newspaper title and chronological sorted thereafter, starting in 1959 through 1990. In Series 2 the clippings have been arranged under individual subject headings which have been kept as close to the original headings as possible and are in alphabetical order.
