Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Paul Schullery is a prominent western conservationist, writer, and scholar. Schullery was born in Middletown, Pennsylvania and now lives in Bozeman, Montana. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in American History at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio in 1970 and Master’s Degree in American History from Ohio University in 1977. In 1972, Schullery started to work for Yellowstone National Park as a seasonal ranger-naturalist, also working three winters as historian-archivist, during which time he completed his M.A. thesis (Ohio University, 1976) on Yellowstone’s administrative archives. In 1977, he left Yellowstone National Park to work as the executive director of the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont. In 1982, Schullery moved to Livingston, Montana to work as an independent researcher and writer before returning to Pennsylvania in 1986, to work as an associate editor for County Journal Magazine. In 1988, Schullery returned to work for Yellowstone National Park until his retirement from the National Park Service in 2008. During this time, he held a series of positions for the park service working on writing and researching the parkand its management issues, as well as developing the park's publication program, including the quarterly journal Yellowstone Science, and launching the biennial scientific conference series on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In 1996, he became a part-time park service employee in order to spend more time pursuing his own research and writing projects. In 2003, he and his spouse, Marsha Karle, moved from Yellowstone to Bozeman, Montana, where Schullery continued to work part-time for the park service until his retirement in 2008. At various times Schullery has served as an advisor for a variety of organizations, institutions, and other educational enterprises such as: Montana State University Library, Florentine Films, the Science Museum of Minnesota, The International Fly Fishing Center, The Amon Carter Museum, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Montana Historical Society, BBC, Discovery Channel, the Museum of the Rockies, and more. Schullery is the author, co-author, or editor of more than fifty books and has received many awards including honorary doctorates from Montana State University and Ohio University. In 2009, he was named scholar in residence at Montana State University Library, a voluntary position Schullery still holds.

Note to Researchers (for when restricted files are opened): Many of Schullery's book-length works that relate to Yellowstone National Park, and the overwhelming majority of shorter works he prepared on that subject, were completed as part of his duties as an employee of the National Park Service (i.e., Schullery received no royalties or fees for this work beyond his routine salary, and retains no copyright to these works). This means that most of the administrative records relating to these works remain in the National Park Service's record systems under the appropriate Federal records-management schedules and procedures, and will not be found here. Thus, folders dedicated to some projects may be unexpectedly thin.

Series 6:  Bear Research for PublicationReturn to Top

This series contains research materials compiled by Schullery that pertains to writings on bears. Included are articles, books, interviews, and correspondence about bears. The bulk of the files pertain to bears native to Montana, Wyoming, and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem; however, there is also included information about bears native to North America and across the world. Other items include scientific reports, news reports about bear attacks, myths about bears, and other information.

This series is separated into four sections delineated by the creator’s order. Section one is general bear research files arranged alphabetically A-Z. Section 2 consists of specific materials pertaining to Schullery's book The Bear Hunter’s Century biographical files, random newspaper clippings, and educational brochures. Section three consists of materials pertaining to International Association for Bear Research and Management, newsletters, and conference proceedings. Section four is specific exploratory research material for a fourth edition of Schullery’s book, Bears of Yellowstone, that was never written. A portion of Series 6 is available for research. The items in this series that are restricted due to privacy concerns have been noted with a bold bracketed “R” ([R]) next to the folder’s title.
