Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William DeShaw, born William Upenshaw in1834, arrived in San Francisco ca. 1850, allegedly from Nicaragua. He ran a general store at Agate Point on Bainbridge Island for many years.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of business and record books for DeShaw's Point Agate Store from 1852 to 1898, plus business records for 1866 and 1887, and a journal of accounts for the Point Agate Trading Post from 1876 to 1880. The collection also includes the New England House register book, San Francisco, Calif. This volume contains guest registrations from Dec. 19, 1849, to Sept. 12, 1850, as well as DeShaw's first ledger entries, 1852 ff. The inside cover of the 1875-1885 ledger includes an itemized account of the burial expenses for Chief Seattle, who died June 7, 1866, paid by William DeShaw.

Persons represented in the Point Agate business records include William Bell, Arthur Armstrong Denny, David S. Maynard, George Anson Meigs, and Chief Seattle.
