Biographical NoteReturn to Top
George H. Atkinson was a missionary, educator, scientist, and publicist, and is considered the father of Oregon's public school system. He founded the Clackamas Female Seminary, and was pastor of the First Congregational Church in Portland, Oregon from 1865-1872. He married Nancy Bates in 1846.
