Historical NoteReturn to Top

Arthur C. Deck was born on 20 February 1908 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1928 with a degree in mining engineering. Not being able to find a job in that field, he went to work for the old Salt Lake Telegram where he worked his way up from city beat reporter to executive editor of both the Telegram and Tribune. He served as executive editor of the Tribune until his retirement in 1980. His most nationally prominent achievement was his election to the presidency of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1973. Deck married Mary Willey in 1936. He died in 1981.
