Vera Joyce Nelson (1903- ) was an Oregon poet and officer in the Verseweavers, a poetry group out of Portland, Oregon.

Content Description

The collection consists of Nelson's personal and professional correspondence, published materials, and miscellaneous papers.

There are numerous correspondence files between Nelson and various members of the poetry and publishing communities. Correspondence is divided into incoming professional correspondence from 1938-1972 (526 letters), incoming personal correspondence from 1949-1972 (274 letters), and outgoing correspondence from 1951-1972 (62 letters). Major correspondents include: Glen Coffield, Ethel Romig Fuller, Wings Press, Helen Dickensheets, Courtland and Eleanor Matthews, and Caroline Patterson.

Published materials include copies of magazines and other publications in which Nelson's poetry appeared. There are also newsletters and bulletins from Verseweavers, the Oregon State Poetry Alliance, and the Willamette Writers Conference, among other organization with which Nelson was affiliated.

Among the miscellaneous papers are Nelson's high school thesis, notes and clippings on the sinking of the Feltre, and numerous newspaper clippings by and about Vera J. Nelson.

There are also 6 boxes of undescribed materials from a later accession, Up 318. Sound recordings on reel to reel tape are included in this material, as are books by other authors (many containing notes to Nelson), assorted papers and correspondence.
