Historical NoteReturn to Top
James Willis Nesmith was the second US Senator elected from Oregon, serving 1861 -1867. He was also elected to the US Congress in 1873 and served until 1875. He served both houses of the legislature as a Democrat. A bill to create Nesmith County, also known as Measure 9, was on the November 8, 1910 ballot in Oregon as an initiated state statute, where it was defeated. The measure would have created the County of Nesmith out of the northern part of Douglas County and the southern part of Lane County.
