Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dr. Lemont Addison Gates was born in Brookfield, Missouri on July 28, 1873, the son of Edward E. and Emma (Thurston) Gates. Lemont was educated at the Northwestern University medical department in Chicago and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa, graduating with honors in 1898. He first moved Thermopolis, Wyoming to begin private practice and moved on to Bridger, Montana where he lived the rest of his life. In addition to practicing medicine, Gates also owned and operated a drug store at Bridger. He married on December 25, 1899, to Janet Mowry, a native of New York state and again on September 28, 1909 to Emily Hyde of Pompey's Pillar, Montana. Gates died August 29, 1937 in Billings, Montana.

The Gates day books are a two volume collection recording medical transactions between Dr. Gates and his patients in chronological order. The entries of volume one begin on January 1, 1911 and continue through December 7, 1929. The second volume covers August 1, 1930 through August 13, 1937. In both the names of patients are listed and the amount charged for services. In many cases there are brief notations of the named person's illness, injury, or treatment for the same.

Acquisition Information

Day books created by Dr. Lemont Addison Gates were donated to Montana State University by Isola Wilson of Rygate, Montana on October 19, 1967. This collection was subsequently reported to the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections and assigned control number 79-662.
