Eugene Pearl "Gene" Marquess was a non-commissioned officer in Company D, 74th U.S. Naval Construction Battalion, which was stationed on the island of Betio. His hometown was listed as Boise, Idaho, and his wife's name was Hazel. He had been in the retail lumber distribution business prior to World War II. His parents lived at 9033 N. Chautauqua Street in Portland, Oregon.
