Historical NoteReturn to Top

George M. Cornwall (1867-1950) of Portland, Or. began publishing The Timberman in 1899 as a "journal devoted to the lumber interests of Oregon." Under the original title of The Columbia River and Oregon Timberman, Cornwall produced a well-illustrated monthly magazine covering all aspects of the timber industry, including logging operations, forestry practices, transportation, lumber operation, and wood product manufacture. The magazine's name was shortened to The Timberman in 1904 January, and the geographical focus was expanded to encompass the entire Pacific Northwest.

Upon Cornwall's death in 1950, his son, George F. Cornwall, and Edgar P. Hoener, long-time staff member of The Timberman, became co-publishers. In 1955, Miller Freeman Publications acquired a forty-five percent interest in the magazine. The Timberman remained unchanged in scope and content, however, until 1957, when Miller Freeman purchased the remaining shared and directed that the magazine specialize in woods management, logging, forestry, and transportation. Other lumber industry topics previously covered by The Timberman became the exclusive subjects of another Miller Freeman publication, The Lumberman. In 1962, The Timberman was combined with The Lumberman and Woods Industries to form a new magazine, Forest Industries.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection contains photographs from the files of The Timberman magazine that reflect the magazine's editorial content and advertising from its founding until the 1960s. The photographs were either collected by or taken for the magazine and date from 1865-1964, with the bulk of the images having been taken after 1919. Subjects depicted include logging, lumber mills, lumber transportation, various wood products and manufacturing, forest fires and timber management, and timber industry executives, primarily in the Pacific Northwest, as well as views of the lumber industry outside the United States and landscape and town views of various places in the Northwest. These photographs include images that were submitted to the magazine but not published, as well as those that actually appeared in print. Most are the work of commercial photographers, but there are also snapshots, presumably taken on the job by lumber company employees and owners, included in the collection.

The majority of the photographs are identified by lumber company name and by the date of publication. Names of lumber companies are either spelled out or indicated by alpha-numerical codes on the images. Dates of publication on each photograph are shown by "TT," followed by the month and year.
