Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Photograph album containing 60 black and white photographs taken from 1927-1930, nearly all by David Shurtliff of Vale, Oregon, who assembled the album. A handwritten inscription on the inside cover reads: "David Shurtliff / V.H.S. '29." The photographs predominantly depict buildings, landscapes, activities, and events in and near Vale. Each photograph has a typewritten caption, including the date and photographer, and sometimes technical information about the photography, such as exposure time, filters used, or printing details. Scenes of Vale include the Drexel Building and the Boswell Building; street scenes in the business district; and views of the town from the tops of buildings in Vale. Photographs of activities and events include images of the 1929 Vale High School football team, player Richard Stacey, and a game against Weiser High School; a visit by the Cole Bros. Circus; a pioneer gathering at the Riverside Pavilion; and Fourth of July celebrations in 1927. The album also includes scenes in Owyhee, Oregon, and of the construction of the Owyhee Dam.
