Historical NoteReturn to Top

Fay Hampton Robertson, compiler of the family histories held in the collection, was the daughter of Laura Henrietta Dillard and Horace Hampton. A resident of Eugene, Oregon, she took it upon herself to record her family's stories after retiring from her career as an elementary school principal.

The son of William and Eleanor Limerick Moore, Jonathan Limerick Moore (1830-1862) was a pioneer and diarist who traveled from Missouri to Oregon, March 3 to Sept. 16, 1852. His sister, Sarah Ann Moore (1828-1855) also travelled to Oregon, in 1853, where she started a small school in what is now the Masonic cemetery.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of Jonathan Limerick Moore's diary, as well family histories compiled by Fay Hampton Robinson on the Hamptons and the Dillards.

Jonathan Limerick Moore's diary describes his journey from Missouri to Oregon. Moore describes his duties as trail boss and daily experience.

The Hampton family history is divided into five sections:

"John Jacob Hampton and family" details the journey of John Jacob Hampton from Kentucky to Oregon in 1845, possibly on the infamous Meek's Cutoff journey.

"John Douglas Hampton family and descendants" includes with a genealogy of the family of John Jacob Hampton's son, John Douglas, up to 1964, with reminiscences of her grandfather (John Douglas) by Fay Hampton Robinson.

"William and Eleanor Limerick Moore family" describes the descendants of William and Eleanor Limerick Moore, parents of Jonathan Limerick Moore, with particular attention to daughter Sarah Ann Moore, Robinson's great-aunt.

The fourth section is a recipe for "Old Time Cream Pie and Sweet Dumplings" credited to Elizabeth Fickle Hampton. Finally, a fifth miscellaneous section consists of excerpts from "stories and incidents as related by persons who were on the Meek's Cut Off and the Lost Wagon Train of 1845" among others.

Also included is a draft of Robinson's history of the Dillard family, from George Dillard's journey to Virginia in 1648 to the life of Robinson's maternal grandfather, William Renshaw Dillard (1831-1908). Robinson is primarily concerned with the Dillard families movement to and settling of what became Lane County.

There is also a single, handwritten page of notes on the life of Sarah Winter Moore, daughter of Jonathan Limerick Moore.

Three tintype prints of family members are also included.
