Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles J. Hash moved to Idaho from Brookfield, Missouri, to work for the United States Forest Service in the 1910's. His wife, Sara, initially came along, but moved back East for unknown reasons. Mr. Hash moved to western Montana in 1919, where he was given a position with the Forest Service in the Flathead Valley as an assistant Fire Chief.

This collection consists of Mr. Hash’s trail diaries and correspondence from his days as a Forest Service employee in Montana and Idaho. Also included in the collection are several letters that Mr. Hash received in 1919.

Series I: Forest Service Diaries

This series contains Mr. Hash's trail notes and diaries as a Forest Service Ranger. They note such things as employee performance, tasks completed, and suggested repairs or improvements. These notes also served as “time cards” for Forest Service employees, providing a look into their daily routines.

Series II: Correspondence
4 items
This series contains correspondence between Mr. Hash and various friends and relatives. Included in this series is an unofficial letter of promotion from the United States Forest Service. A letter from an unidentified man in New Orleans is also in the series.
