Biographical NoteReturn to Top
George Thomas was born on December 29, 1866. He received A.B. and M.A. degrees from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Halle University in Germany. Dr. Thomas was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction in Utah in 1921, but he resigned that position, later that year, in order to serve as President of the University of Utah. He held this position until his retirement in 1941. During his tenure, Dr. Thomas received national recognition for his work in the field of higher education by being elected President of the National Association of University Presidents in 1935 and President of the American Association of State Universities in 1936. George Thomas died April 11, 1951.
