Summary: The Walter and Martha Peoples Manuscript and Research Papers consist of the original handwritten draft of the biographical scrapbook "Cut Bank Pioneers.” The biographies are primarily of early twentieth century homesteaders who settled in the area and list the names, birth dates, family milestones, and brief facts such as the general location of their claims and later occupations. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings, letters, and miscellaneous notes used by the Peoples in their research while preparing the scrapbook. The reel of microfilm, prepared by the Montana Historical Society in 1964, reproduces the pages of the completed scrapbook, along with another prepared at the same time by Dr. C. H. Minette pertaining to the Cut Bank Army Air Force Base.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Walter E. Peoples was born in Morristown, Tennessee on November 12, 1885. He filed on a homestead claim five miles east of Cut Bank, Glacier County, Montana on April 4, 1909, and later became a hardware store owner in the town of Cut Bank. Peoples served on the town's council for many years and also as a member of the fire department. Peoples married Martha Macy Gungoll on June 1, 1920. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on April 5, 1889 and had been a teacher in the local schools. She later became active in the Cut Bank Women's Club which helped establish the Glacier County Public Library. In 1946 Martha became president of the Montana Federation of Women's Clubs. In the early 1960s, Martha and Walter began collecting biographical information on early pioneers of the Cut Bank area which they transcribed into an illustrated scrapbook that was presented to the Glacier County Public Library. Walter Peoples died on February 13, 1973 and Martha died on July 16, 1984.

Acquisition Information

Original manuscript and related research materials created or collected by Walter and Martha Peoples, Cut Bank, Montana were donated to Montana State University by the couple on February 23, 1966. The Glacier County Library, Cut Bank, Montana, loaned the copy of the completed scrapbook "Cut Bank Pioneers" to Montana State University in September, 1965. The scrapbook was subsequently microfilmed by the Montana Historical Society and returned to the Glacier County Library.
