Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1969, the University of Utah began an aggressive campaign to bring more diversity to its campus by recruiting minority students and faculty. An important part of this diversity drive was the establishment of services specifically for the minority student including the Ethnic Student Affairs Office, the Center for Academic Advising, the Minority Tutoring Program, and the Ethnic Studies Program which was implemented in 1973. The Ethnic Studies Program originally consisted of Black Studies, Chicano Studies, and Native American Studies. An Asian-American Studies Program was proposed in 1974, but was not implemented until 1995.
