- The Frankland J. Kennard photograph collection consists of 454 photographs and three rolls of 8 mm film taken by Kennard. Most of the images deal with Company 1507 of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) located in Vernal, Utah from 1935 to 1941. The photographs in Kennard's collection show works projects, such as the building of reservoirs as part of CCC's Drought-Relief Program, and aspects of camp life including sports (i.e. wresting and boxing), classes, library services, eating areas, church gatherings and musical activities. The collection also consists of several images taken from a parade that show the floats and store fronts of Vernal. Some photographs are identified by church organization or with the names of camp leaders. Kennard's collection also includes photographs of the Zions and Cedar Breaks CCC camps. Other images include shots from around San Francisco, California (including the Golden Gate Bridge), Salt Lake City, and Bryce Canyon. The three rolls 8 mm film (with second copy on VHS format) consist of Kennard family activities. Subject identifications appear on few of the photographs and some are difficult to read or incomplete.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Frankland J. Kennard was born in Riverside, Utah on 6 October 1903. He was the second child of Leonidas Hamlin Kennard, Jr. and Frances Catherine Frankland. In 1922 he married Elinor Scholes and they had three children. In 1931 Scholes died and in 1933 Kennard married Reva Gladys Bischoff with whom he had ten children. Kennard attaind a reserve status in the U.S. Army which qualified him for the position he received as Educational Advisor with the Vernal CCC camp in April of 1936. His CCC stations also included Zions and Cedar Breaks. In 1941 the U.S. Army called Kennard to active duty where he served until the end of the war. Kennard also taught at various schools in Utah and Wyoming before completing a law degree and opening a practice in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on 25 July 1995 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
