Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Wanda Fae Hardin moved from her native Texas to Corvallis in late 1945 to live with her brother and his wife, who were students at Oregon State. Hardin enrolled at Corvallis High School in January 1946 and graduated from Corvallis High in June 1946. She attended Oregon State College from the fall of 1946 through spring 1950, majoring in home economics (until March 1950) and then in education. Hardin married Gordon Warren Fruits in December 1950.

The Wanda F. Hardin Fruits Memoir, Living the Dream, documents Fruits' experiences from 1946 through 1950 as a student at Corvallis High School and Oregon State College. In her memoir, Fruits describes her experiences living in Corvallis as a high school and college student; summer jobs picking fruit and working in agricultural fields; working as a fire lookout for the Douglas Forest Protective Association at Ward's Butte near Roseburg for several summers; living arrangements at the Heather Rae Cooperative House; and participation in activities at Westminster House. The memoir includes references to Fruits' coursework at Oregon State, her impressions of the Memorial Union, social activities, and her participation in a Vitamin C research study.
The memoir includes numerous reproductions of photographs depicting Fruits and her husband and family; fellow students and student activities; her work as a fire lookout; and Corvallis and campus scenes.

This volume was donated to the Archives in 2008 by Fruits' daughter.
