Historical NoteReturn to Top

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the first Student Union building at the University of Montana-Missoula (then Montana State University) took place on July 24, 1934. The building, now home to the Fine Arts Department, opened to student use on November 22, 1935.

The university broke ground for a new student union building in April 1954. Dedication of this building, called the Lodge, took place February 17, 1955 in conjunction with Charter Day celebrations for the university's 62nd anniversary.

Construction of the current student union, the University Center, began Monday, October 3, 1966. The building opened to student use on January 6, 1969. The official grand opening ceremonies took place February 7, 1969.
