Accession No. 2424-002: Lloyd Woodburne papers, 1980Return to Top
Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Karyl Winn August 25, 1980, covering 1932, 1950-1960, 1980.
Woodburne, who came to the University of Washington from the University of Michigan in 1950, emphasizes the procedures he developed for faculty promotion and tenure in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was the College's Dean from 1950 to 1960. A direct result of this effort, he feels, has been the transformation of the university into a research institution. He touches on the Oppenheimer affair; his references to Jane Sanders' work is to her 1979 article in "Pacific Northwest Quarterly." He also discusses his own teaching in the Psychology Department, 1970-1975. Toward the end of Side III he begins a brief discussion of the development of Associated Vintners, the First winery of high quality wine in the state, 1962-1980. Since 1975, when he retired from the University of Washington, he has been chairman of the board of this firm.
