Harriet Nesmith McArthur was the daughter of James Willis Nesmith (1820-1885), the second US Senator elected from Oregon, and mother of Clifton Nesmith McArthur, namesake of McArthur Court at the University of Oregon. In 1898, she helped found the Oregon Historical Society.
