Ralph Martin McGrath submitted this paper in fulfillment of the requirements for David Miller's history class at the University of Utah in 1965. McGrath is a descendant of Austin Cowles and had access to unpublished letters from Joseph Smith to various members of the Cowles family.

Some photocopied letters may also be included in the collection.
