Historical NoteReturn to Top

The 1928 OSC-NYU game represented the first time that Oregon State traveled to the East Coast to play a football team in that area of the United States. The OSC team left Corvallis on November 22, just 5 days after an upset loss to the University of Oregon. Traveling by train, the team stopped in Chicago and worked out at Soldier Field on Monday and Tuesday of the following week. The team arrived in New York City on Wednesday, November 28, one day before the game.

Oregon State, a 3-1 underdog coming into the game, had a 5-3 record; NYU's record was 8-1. Despite the odds and several players ill with the flu, OSC won the Thanksgiving Day game played at Yankee Stadium by a score of 25-13. The victory was the subject of many sportswriters columns' over the next several days. The team's return to Oregon was greeted by crowds at stops along the way, including LaGrande, Pendleton, The Dalles, Portland and Corvallis.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

These two volumes contain news clippings of events pertaining to the November 29, 1928, football game between Oregon State College and New York University in Yankee Stadium. Many of them were written by renowned sports columnists of the day, such as Grantland Rice, Frank Wallace, Ed Frayne, W.O. McGeehan, Paul Gallico, Edward J. Neil and Vincent Treanor. The clippings document the OSC team's travel by train to and from New York City, pre-game activities of both teams and individual players, the game, and the game's impact on the impression of West Coast college football.
