Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1961, the Utah State Legislature established the campus grounds of the University of Utah as the official State Arboretum. An Arboretum Advisory Board was than appointed, but a combination of deficient funds and a rapidly expanding campus hindered the creation of an effective program and daily operation of the arboretum was conferred upon the Department of Facilities Planning and Physical Plant and Operations.

A renewed commitment to the arboretum was made in 1977 with the hiring of W. Richard Hildreth as the first full-time Director. In 1980, a site encompassing 147 acres at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon was chosen as a permanent location for the arboretum and ground was officially broken in 1983. Red Butte Garden and Arboretum was opened to the public in 1985.
