Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William C. Anderson, author and Air Force officer, was born May 7, 1920, in La Junta Colorado. Shortly after his birth, his father Robert and mother Fannie Anderson moved to Boise, Idaho. William, also known as Andy, grew up in Boise. He graduated from Boise High School in 1938. After high school William attended Boise Junior College and Fort Hays College in Kansas. He put his education on hold and joined the Army Air Corps shortly after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Anderson chose a career as an Air Force Officer. He flew in the Berlin Airlift, piloted air-evacuation aircraft during the Korean War, and commanded a weather reconnaissance squadron during the Eniwetok H-bomb tests. He also wrote while in the Air Force, editing Air Force publications and beginning work on his first books. He ended his military career involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis and working in the Pentagon. He retired from the Air Force in 1964 and eventually moved back to his hometown of Boise.

Love for writing kept him busy in his retirement. His 20 books were influenced by his experience in the military and his natural wit and humor. Anderson "hit it big" with his book Bat-21, the true story of the rescue of a downed American Air Force officer in Vietnam. In 1988 he wrote the screenplay for the movie version, starring Danny Glover and Gene Hackman. This movie was a huge success and the highlight of Anderson's career. Anderson also wrote a monthly column for Motor Home magazine. This was a humorous column about Anderson's journeys with his wife on the road.

Anderson married Dortha Power in 1948. William and Dortha were the parents of three children: Ann, Scott, and Holly.

Anderson died of natural causes at the age of 83 in Fairfield, California, on May 16, 2003.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The William C. Anderson papers consist chiefly of correspondence, contracts, business papers, clippings, fan mail, photos, and other papers, relating to his books and writing career. Virtually every aspect of book writing, from the creative impulses through business negotiations (contracts, foreign editions, film adaptations) and promotional tours are documented here. There is a great deal of paperwork relating to two books: Bat-21, the story of the rescue of a downed American fighter pilot during the Vietnam War (made into a movie starring Gene Hackman and Danny Glover), and another work of nonfiction, Lady Bluebeard, about Lyda Southard, a serial husband killer in Idaho. Most of Anderson's other books, also represented by papers in the collection, are in the humorous vein, as are the magazine columns he wrote about retirement travel in a motor home. Anderson corresponded widely; that correspondence can be found throughout the collection. Special Collections also holds foreign language editions of Bat-21 in Japanese, French, and Dutch.

Anderson wrote some twenty books. His most popular books were Bat-21, Lady Bluebeard, and the Penelope stories. This series contains contracts for his books, sales and royalty reports, and correspondence relating to publication, reprints, rights, and possible television and motion picture adaptations.

Anderson's career highlight was his book and screenplay Bat-21. Bat-21 was the story of the rescue of Iceal "Gene" Hambleton, the navigator on an American combat aircraft shot down in Vietnam. This book and film brought Anderson wide recognition and is the largest section of this series. Correspondence can be found with literary agents, producers, publishers, and Gene Hambleton and his wife Gwen. Much of the correspondence relates to the production of the motion picture.

Anderson's book Lady Bluebeard is a story about a female serial killer. Lyda Southard was imprisoned in Anderson's hometown of Boise, Idaho. Research files comprise much of this series. Anderson's correspondence with Idaho's former Governor's Cecil Andrus and Phil Batt reveal his efforts in trying to create a film about Southard. Drafts of Anderson's Lady Bluebeard screenplay are also included in this series.

Anderson's Penelope is the story of a porpoise used for military communications. This story was very successful and Anderson sold movie rights to Filmways Productions.

Penelope was so successful that Anderson wrote a sequel. Penelope the Damp Detective was the evolution of Penelope. Anderson wrote a screenplay, which is included in this series.

The subjects of Anderson's books were inspired by his life experiences. His first book, Five, Four, Three, Two, One -- Pfft (1960), written while he was still in the Air Force, was a humorous look at military life on Eniwetok Atoll, site of nuclear bomb tests in the 1950s. Whether Anderson's experiences were family adventures, military endeavors, or trips to the hospital, Anderson always wrote with a healthy imagination.

4:  Motor Home columnReturn to Top

Anderson's love for traveling the United States in his motor home with his wife Dortha led to the opportunity to write for Motor Home magazine. Anderson began his "Back Roads" column for Motor Home starting in 1988. In 1995 Anderson's column was renamed to "Off Ramp", but the column's content and Anderson's humorous style remained the same. Anderson wrote his column practically every month and continued to until March 2003, two months before his death. Typescripts and published copies of Anderson's monthly column are both available within this series.

Anderson wrote for a variety of magazines. He wrote articles for GMC Motor Home News, The Armed Forces Journal, The Observer, The Retired Officer's Association and many others. Anderson wrote his "C.R Terror" column for the United State Air force Military Air Transport Service, or MATS Flyer, the title of their magazine. The combat readiness training programs inspired C.R. Terror; he took the programs initials CRT and created his fictional hero C.R. Terror. He wrote many co-authored pieces. Most of his joint works were done with Larry Lansburgh, who tended to focus mostly on film as a medium.

This series is devoted to the photographs found within Anderson's collection. There are photos of Gene Hackman and Danny Glover, promoting Anderson's film Bat-21. Many research photos are present of Lyda Southard, which paint an even more descriptive picture of Anderson's Lady Bluebeard. Promotional photos for Penelope are also present.
