Historical NoteReturn to Top

Peter Bernard Kyne (1880 - 1957 ) was born in San Francisco, where he lived the greater part of his life. He became a writer of novels, short stories, and articles. When still under 18, he lied about his age and enlisted in Company L, 14th U.S. Infantry, which served in the Philippines from 1898-1899.

The Spanish-American War and the following insurrection of General Emilio Aguinaldo provided background for many of Kyne's later stories.

In 1910, Kyne married Helene Johnston. During World War I, he saw action as a captain in Battery A of the 144th field Artillery, known as the California Grizzlies. This experience again provided material for future stories.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Correspondence written while Kyne served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War was mostly written while he was stationed in Manilla. His letters describe army life, and the conditions of the city of Manila and its residents. He also describes battles, insurgents, fellow solders, and officers.

Letters written between the wars refer to his voyage home after his discharge, and visits with relatives in San Francisco.

There is one letter written from France, on October 3, 1918, where he writes about his experience thus far. His signature notes that he was a captain serving with the American Expeditionary Force.

The collection also includes a discharge notice from service in the Spanish-American War.
