Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Alice Josephine Shaw was born on February 14, 1909 in Kansas, one of three children born to Robert Whiteman and Alice Singletary Shaw. Her father was a preacher and the family moved to Bozeman, Montana sometime after 1920. Known primarily by her middle name, Josephine or the nickname “Jo,” she graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1926 and attended her freshman year at Montana State College. She left Bozeman during the summer of 1927 to attend Ottawa University in Kansas, but returned to Bozeman by 1930. She married Harry Lee Orendorff in 1940 and the couple lived in Benedict, Kansas where Josephine died in 1995.

The Alice Josephine Shaw scrapbook contains memorabilia such as party invitations, student records, playbills, and recital programs she collected while a student at both Montana State College and Ottawa University. Of particular interest is a June 20, 1929 program she kept from the Gallatin Gateway Inn for ceremonies commemorating the opening of the summer season at Yellowstone National Park.
