Biographical Note
Philip Cornwell Johnson was born in Oakland, California in 1907. He
received a bachelor's degree in foresty and a master's degree in entomology
from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. He also attended the
University of Montana's School of Public Administration.
He worked in forest insect research for the U.S. Department of
Agriculture for more than 38 years. From 1931 to 1953 he worked with the Bureau
of Plant Entomology and Plant Quarantine, and from 1953 to 1969 he worked for
the U.S. Forest Service as head of the Intermountain Forest and Range
Experiment Station in Missoula, Montana.
Johnson was vitally interested in railroads of the western United
States. He took hundreds of photographs of railroads throughout the west that
were published in books and magazines. He wrote several books that remain
unpublished.
Johnson was married to Evelyn Johnson; they had two sons, David and
Ronald. He was a member of the University Congregational Church in Missoula. He
died in 1990.
Content Description
This extensive collection reflects Johnson's interests in entomology,
the outdoors, photography and railroads throughout the western United
States.
The manuscripts in the collection preserve the work from one of
western Montana's most prolific and prominent railroad researchers and focus on
the logging railroads of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Montana and the
electrified portion of the Chicago, Milwaukee & Pacific Railroad.
Railroad photographs form the vast bulk of the collection and include
images from California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British
Columbia. The images mostly show rolling stock and engines, with some showing
trains in motion or crossing bridges. Railroads represented include the
Southern Pacific Railway; the Sacramento Northern Railway; the Nevada County
Narrow Gauge; Great Northern Railroad; Virginia and Truckee; Chicago,
Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad; Western Pacific Railroad; Atchison,
Topeka, and Santa Fe; Sumpter Valley narrow gauge; the Union Pacific; Union
Railroad of Oregon; Esquiamalt and Nanaimo; Portland Electric Power Company
interurban; Oregon and Northwestern; Red River Logging Company; the Camino,
Placerville, and Lake Tahoe; Michigan-California Lumber Company; Quincy
Railroad; Santa Maria Valley Pacific Electric; Northwestern Pacific;
Michigan-California Lumber Company; Long Bell Lumber Company; Petaluma and
Santa Rosa Interurban Electric Railway; Yosemite Valley Railroad; Pickering
Lumber Company; Weyerhaeuser Timber Company; Sacramento City Lines; Clover
Valley Lumber Company; Portland Traction Company; Lorane Valley Logging
Company; Washington, Idaho, and Montana; Camas Prairie Railway; Walla Walla
Valley Railway; Nez Perce Railroad; Butte, Anaconda, and Pacific; Anaconda
Street Railways; White Sulphur Springs and Yellowstone Park Railway; Spokane
International; Craig Mountain Lumber Company; Denver and Rio Grande Western;
Fort Collins Municipal Railway; Canadian Pacific Railway; Northern Pacific; J.
Neils Lumber Company; Rayonier, Incorporated; Anaconda Company; and the Alweg
Monorail in Seattle, Washington.
Images from the San Francisco Bay area are particularly prevalent.
Besides railroad images, there are images of San Francisco cable cars and
construction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in 1935. Other California
images include San Francisco, Oakland, the Yosemite Valley, Lassen National
Forest, the coast, and Sacramento. There are also images of insect surveys in
California in the 1930s.
The collection also contains other images from Washington, Oregon,
British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana, as well as a few scenic images from Utah
and Arizona. There are a number of images of Coeur d'Alene and Priest Lake,
Idaho. There are also images of Crater Lake, Oregon, the Columbia Gorge, Grand
Coulee Dam, insect surveys in Montana, and the Canadian Rockies.
While the collection mainly documents places rather than people, there
are images of the Johnson family, friends, and the Johnson summer home in
California.

and Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections, Maureen and Mike Mansfield
Library, The University of Montana-Missoula.
Administrative Information
Arrangement :
The collection is arranged in two series:
Series I: Manuscripts, 0.2 linear feet, 1969-1980
Series II: Photographs, 9.5 linear feet, 1928-1974
Custodial History :
The materials remained in the posession of Philip Johnson and his
family until donation to the Archives.
Acquisition Information :
Philip Johnson donated the manuscripts in 1979. The photographs,
willed to the Mansfield Library, were a gift of his sons, David and Ronald, in
1992.
Processing Note :
The manuscripts in the collection were originally processed in two
parts: SC 326 and SC 368. The photographs were integrated into the photograph
collection; some remained unprocessed. In 2004, the two manuscripts adn the
photographs were reunited and re-described. Johnson kept a meticulous catalog
of his photographs with complete descriptions of each image; not all of those
notes were transferred during the original processing, and the relationship of
the unprocessed photographs remained unknown. During this reprocessing,
Johnson's descriptions were used more precisely to describe the images.
