- The Victor E. George Reminiscence Transcript, composed in 1961, tells the story of his parent's removal to Montana from Missouri in 1883. The narrative describes the first George family settlement in the Paradise Valley in Park County south of Livingston, and their eventual move to Carbon County in 1893. The reminiscence describes many incidents which occurred to Victor while growing up on the homestead near Roscoe, including farm chores, school work, neighbors, and encounters with bears, rattlesnakes and wolves. Victor also briefly describes his teaching career. His later work as a rancher completes the reminiscence.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Victor E. George was born on June 6, 1893 in Carbon County, Montana. He grew up on his parents' ranch near the present day town of Roscoe, Montana and attended the Billings Polytechnic Institute where he earned a teaching certificate in 1911. That year George began teaching school in rural Carbon and Stillwater Counties, but he left the profession after five years to resume ranching full time. He married Margaret Ryan on December 31, 1931 and the couple had four daughters. In 1950, George retired from ranching and moved to Billings, Montana where he worked in retail sales and real estate. He died in 1980 at his home in Billings.

Sprinkled with humorous observations, the reminiscence describes many incidents which occurred to Victor while growing up on the homestead near Roscoe, including farm chores, school work, neighbors, and encounters with bears, rattlesnakes and wolves. The communities of Red Lodge, Absarokee, and Columbus (Stillwater County) are mentioned, and Victor also briefly describes his teaching career. His later work as a rancher completes the reminiscence.
