Historical Note

Sy Adler is a professor of the School of Urban Studies and Planning in Portland State University's College of Urban and Public Affairs. He received his B.A. in Urban studies University of Pittsburgh in 1971; his M.C.P. in city and regional planning from Harvard University in 1973; and his Ph.D. in city and regional planning from University of California at Berkeley 1980.

Professor Adler joined the faculty at Portland State in 1982 after working in the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning on transportation and growth management issues. He has taught more than a dozen different courses at Portland State and served as director of the School of Urban Studies and Planning from 1996 through 2000. His interests include the evolution of planning institutions, theories and practices, urban social and political dynamics, and relationships between planning and public health.

His book, Oregon Plans - The Making of an Unquiet Land-Use Revolution, "explores the dynamics of passing the key state laws that set the statewide program into motion, establishing the agency charged with implementing those laws, adopting the land use planning goals that are the heart of the Oregon system, and monitoring and enforcing the implementation of those goals through a unique citizen organization." Content Description

The collection is comprised of materials used by PSU Professor Sy Adler to write the book Oregon Plans - The Making of an Unquiet Land-Use Revolution. The materials pertain to the development of Oregon’s land-use planning laws and implementation. The majority of the documents were created between 1970-1980 and gathered by Adler from a variety of archival repositories. The collection contains photocopies of correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and newspaper clippings that he referenced in the book. Please consult Professor Adler's publication for more information on the origins of the materials contained in this collection.
