Galand W. Nield was born (November 16, 1947) and raised in Afton Wyoming. In the latter 1960s, Galand served a two-year mission in Australia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1969, after completing his mission, he returned home to Wyoming and married Maureen Susan Meecham. Very soon after his marriage he was drafted to serve in the United States Army. In 1969, Galand left for Fort Benning, Georgia for basic training, and then was sent on to Fort Ord in California. From March of 1970 to March of 1971 Galand served in Vietnam with the ‘Tropic Lightning’ 25th Division, HHC 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry, and then the ‘Screaming Eagles' 101st Airborne, HHC 3/506. Galand was awarded a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and various other medals along with sustaining service-related injuries. Galand left Vietnam in March of 1971, and had the rank of Sergeant when he left the military. He currently resides in Smithfield, Utah, and is the owner of Cache Valley Crafts.
This collection consists of five boxes of materials related to Galand Nield's experiences during the Vietnam War from 1969-1971. The materials contained in the collection are; a typescript and cassette recording of an oral history interview of Galand Nield's Vietnam experience, letters of correspondence written mainly by Nield while serving in the military from 1969-71, and typescript of ‘Compilation of Letters to My Wife’ by Galand Nield.
The first box contains the typescript and cassette tape recording of the interview conducted in July of 2003 regarding Nield's time served in the Vietnam War. The rest of the materials in the first box are letters of correspondence between Nield and his family during the years from 1969-71.
The second box contains ‘Compilation of Letters to My Wife,’ a typescript created by Galand Nield based on his own correspondence. The remainder of the collection contains letters of correspondence between Galand and his fiancé/wife, along with a few letters of correspondence between his wife's family and friends from 1969-1971.
