The Rhett Stephens James essay is an undated paper by James entitled "A Nineteenth Century Indian Self-help Program: Brigham Young and the Shoshones." The paper is an attempt to overview some of the steps and actions taken by Brigham Young toward the Indians in areas settled by Mormon colonizers. It is divided into four sections, "Policy Genesis, 1851-1857: Toward a Reinterpretation," "A Period of Indian Farm Disintegration, 1857-1865," "Indian Farms and Controversy, 1872-1878," and "The Establishment of Washakie, Utah."
