Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Utah Humanities Research Foundation was an organization begun in 1944 with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to collect and preserve cultural materials throughout Utah and neighboring regions. It began the publication of the Western Humanities Review. In 1950, Maurice Warshaw established an award for the most significant essay on the humanities to be submitted for publication to the Utah Humanities Research Foundation. The award was renewed until 1952. The Foundation also granted fellowships to qualified people for study in various areas of the humanities within the region.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Utah Humanities Research Foundation records (1944-1954) contain information on cultural materials throughout Utah and neighboring regions. The first seven boxes of the collection, called the Bibliography of the Archives of the Utah Humanities Research Foundation, consist of studies resulting from various fellowships in the humanities. This bibliography was created and organized by the Foundation before being donated to the Marriott Library. It remains in its original order, although several documents were removed before being donated. The rest of the collection was created after the bibliography's publication. Thus, it is arranged separately, although the order mimics that of the previous boxes.
