Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William Robert Meiners, 1921-1995, was a conservationist. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University in Range and Range Livestock Management in 1947 and a Master of Science degree from Utah State University in Range Management in 1965. He served as a range conservationist and resource management specialist for approximately 30 years with the United States Forest Service-USFS, the Soil Conservation Service-SCS, the Bureau of Indian Affairs-BIA, and the Bureau of Land Management-BLM, in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Utah. After retiring William R. Meiners founded the Resources Planning and Management Company with Roderick Scurlock, and began a career as a private consultant. As such, he was a member of the US delegation to the United Nations World Conference on Desertification, convened in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1977 and County Comprehensive Planner, Ada Council of Governments, Ada County, Idaho. He was a member of numerous conservation organizations including the Idaho Wildlife Federation, Ada County Fish and Game League, Idaho Nature Conservancy and the Golden Eagle Chapter of the National Audubon Society. He was appointed a member of the State of Idaho Outfitters and Guides Board by Governor John V. Evans in 1983. His efforts to create the River of No Return Wilderness resulted in the “Central Idaho Wilderness Act of 1980.”

Arrangement

The thirteen boxes that comprised Accession MA 1996-46 were kept in the same order as they were accessioned. Materials from Accession MA 1997-13 are identified and were placed at the rear of box 06. A rough description of the content is provided in the inventory of the boxes, based on the original titles of the folders. Note that this description is neither exhaustive nor exclusive. There might exist other subjects and projects inside each box as well as more of the same in different boxes.

Custodial History

The papers of William R. Meiners were in the possession of William R. Meiners until the time of his death when they were transfered to the possession of Mrs. Marilyn J. Meiners until time of donation.

Acquisition Information

The papers of William R. Meiners were donated to the University of Idaho Library by Marilyn J. Meiners in two accessions, November 1996 (Accession MA 1996-46) and April 1997 (Accession MA 1997-13).
