Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Over the decades since the establishment of the Montana State University Library Special Collections, hundreds of maps were gathered for research purposes. Of those assigned manuscript collection numbers few were actually hand drawn, and many were simply photocopies, photographs or blueprints. The maps that had faded over the years to the point of illegibility, or were deemed of no research value, were destroyed. Those that were retained were placed into this collection, along with printed maps that had no corresponding MARC records.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The maps in this collection have been divided into eight series. Series one consists of USGS topographical maps in the 1:24,000, 1:250,000, and other scales. Almost all of the maps in this series have been individually listed in drawers 1-5. Series two consists of two sets of photographed original maps removed from the Alexander Leggat collection of the US-Canadian Boundary survey and the Missouri River survey. Series three consists of printed Montana state maps without MARC records. Series four consists of photocopied and original Sanborn Insurance maps of Bozeman, Montana. Series five consists of US Western and regional maps. Series six consists of Montana county maps produced by the Department of Transportation and other sources. Series seven consists of Montana City maps. Series 8 consists of irrigation, soil conservation, and miscellaneous Montana regional maps (more than one county). Whenever possible, the original accession number, along with former collection title of maps, is included with the drawer listings. Oversized rolled maps from various series have been listed at the end of this inventory.
