Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Accounting Office at Washington State Normal School was established in 1917 as a duty assigned to the head of the Department of Business Education. A full-time accountant was hired by the school in 1924. The Accounting Office has continued to manage the university’s finances since that date and is currently known as the Accounting Department.

The first ledger in this collection is a voucher register and cash book for members of the Associated Students of Washington State Normal School from 1916 to 1918. The second is an account ledger of Normal School graduates requesting certificates and diplomas from 1928 to 1933. The final item is a “control ledger,” documenting charges and fees of students residing at campus dorms from 1932 to 1935.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
