William Arthur Hoblitzell was born on April 4, 1864, in Pokomoke City, Maryland to Solomon and Ella Hoblitzell. He was an amateur photographer and worked as the chief clerk for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Missoula, Montana in the 1890s. His uncle, Harmon S. Hoblitzell, was the city clerk of Missoula during that time. By 1902, William Hoblitzell had moved back to Maryland and married Florence Coston. Hoblitzell ultimately settled in Washington, DC, where he worked for the Census Bureau. He died in 1943.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection contains photographs in an album as well as loose photographs. All are paper prints, and most are mounted on Kodak mounts. The album photographs appear to have been arranged and labeled by Hoblitzell and show mostly scenes of Missoula, Montana. Significant subjects include buildings (downtown and residential neighborhoods), railroad transportation (mostly Northern Pacific rolling stock), Fort Missoula soldiers, Native Americans, construction, fires, bicyclists, significant floods on the Clark Fork River and damage to the railway, and lumber mills in and around Missoula.

There are also a few photographs taken from the train that Hoblitzell rode from Maryland to Missoula.
