Photographer M.M. (Martin Mason) Hazeltine was born on July 31, 1827 in Vermont. With his brother George, he operated a daguerreotype shop in San Francisco in 1853, which produced scenic photography of places such as Yosemite. The firm later moved to Mendocino, California.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Collection consists of three stereograph cards featuring birds-eye views of 6th, 7th, and 8th streets, respectively, in downtown Boise City, Idaho, taken between 1882 and 1886; together with supporting documentation identifying the scenes and the buildings in them. One card was annotated by Mary (Holcomb) Worswick (1865-1956), identifying Central School; another is annotated by her daughter, Mildred Worswick (1902-1992). The cards were part of "M.M. Hazeltine's Gems of the Pacific Coast" Series.

Augusts Koch's 1890 birds-eye view map of Boise City (Spec. Coll. G4274.B6A3 1890 .K63), though published a few years later, assisted in the dating of the photographs. The balustrade on the gallery of the Central Hotel (7th and Idaho) was a particularly good landmark to orient the 6th and 7th Street photos in this collection with the map. The most noticeable difference between these stereographs and the Koch map is the Idaho Territorial Capitol building--present on the Koch map but not in any of the photos. The Capitol Building was built in 1886. Since Central School was built 1882, the photos are dated circa 1882-1886.

Seventh Street [later Capitol Boulevard] looking north, from the roof of the Central Hotel. The cross street running east-west is Idaho Street. Landmarks include: Central School, (built 1882) is marked with an "X." The building sits between 7th and 8th, on Jefferson (now the west wing of the present State Capitol.); St. Michael's Episcopal Church, on the west (left) side of the street, on the corner of Bannock (which runs behind it) and 7th. It was later renamed Christ Chapel and moved to the North End; then in 1964 to Boise Junior College campus; Central Hotel, whose peaked roof is in the foreground, was on the southeast corner of 7th and Idaho (now part of the site of City Hall). (See Statesman ad, January 1, 1884). Its gallery is clearly visible in Koch's 1890 bird's eye view of Boise; Kingsley Art Gallery on the east (right) side of 7th Street. An advertisement in the Statesman gives its location as "East Side Seventh St., two doors north of Idaho" (October 11, 1881). Its sign is visible and legible hanging in front of the shop.
