Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Lane Summers (1889-1966) was a Seattle, Washington-based lawyer who specialized in maritime law. Born in Nebraska, Summers studied law at the University of Michigan and University of Chicago. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Washington in the 1910s. He served as the deputy prosecuting attorney for King County, Washington from 1914 to 1919. In 1925 Summers began work with the law firm Hayden, Merritt, Summers, and Bucey. An expert in maritime law, Summers served as the lead lawyer on a number of high-profile maritime legal cases, participated in the Maritime Law Association of the United States, and was an active member of the Republican Party. He also helped establish a free legal aid bureau with the Seattle Bar Association in 1939. In 1938, Summers' son Thane died while fighting for the Republicans (Loyalists) during the Spanish Civil War.

The collection also contains correspondence files relating to Summers’ career as a lawyer and his involvement in the Maritime Law Association of the United States.
